DANVERS – Mrs. Mary Ellen (Tivnan) (Jaslowich) Cullen 84 of Brooksby Village, Peabody formerly of Danvers and Salem, beloved wife of William “Bill” Cullen, and wife of the late Francis W. “Fred” Jaslowich, died peacefully September 29th, 2026, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Talbot) Tivnan. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1960. She continued her education at Salem State College earning her bachelor’s degree in 1964 and later earned her Masters of Education also from Salem State.
Mrs. Cullen had been employed as a teacher for many years in the cities of Beverly, Danvers and Salem School Departments. She taught elementary school at both the Horace Mann School and the Saltonstall School until the time of her retirement. She inspired generations of future educators as well as being beloved and well respected by her colleagues and administrators.
Coming from a large Irish Catholic family from Manning Street in Salem, she made many memories, friends and family connections that have lasted her whole lifelong. Mary Ellen was a connector of people. She was active with the alumni activities, both at Salem High School and Salem State College; often helping lead the charge for reunions and gatherings. She was an avid tennis player, enjoyed travel and relished time spent wintering in Florida. As a younger woman, she enjoyed many camping trips and skiing with her family. Faith was an important part of her life as she was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Salem and St. Richard Church in Danvers. She was a long-time resident of Danvers.
Mary Ellen was married to Fred Jaslowich and they had a great life and love, together. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Following Fred’s passing and after raising her children, she found love again, with her best friend and husband Bill Cullen. They enjoyed many wonderful years together visiting family and friends around the world and golfing daily. Together as members of the Wenham Golf Club, Mary Ellen played in many co-ed and women’s golf leagues. Bill brought great joy to her life and she to his. They were a great partnership. Adding new step children and grandchildren to the fold of her love. They travelled the world together with family and friends making memories all along the way and especially enjoyed their winters in Florida. MaryEllen was active in the Salem teachers Union and retirement group. She made many dear life long friends through work. She was an active happy person, often thinking of others before herself. All will remember Mary Ellen with an ever-present smile.
Maryellen will be remembered for her overwhelming love and devotion to her family.
In addition to her beloved husband Bill of 24 years, Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter, Kristen Jaslowich and her husband Dave Larson of Santa Fe, NM, her sons, Steven Jaslowich and his wife, Deborah of Holden and David Jaslowich and his wife, Jennifer of Haverhill, her step children, Michael Cullen and his wife, Eileen of Newburyport, Tricia Cullen of Salem and Christine Player and her husband, Kevin of Hanover, her grandchildren, Colby, Dignan, Ava, Julia, Sarah, Elizabeth, Caroline, Andrew, Daniel and Catherine, her siblings, Terrance Tivnan and his wife, Raana of Weston, Kathleen Hayes and her husband, David of Peabody and Judith Tivnan-Hall and her husband John of Florida and many nieces and nephews. She was the wife of the late Fred Jaslowich and sister of the late, Janice Higgins, Michael, Paul and James Tivnan.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St (rte 62) DANVERS, Tuesday, Oct. 6th at 9 A.M. followed by her funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Margin St., Salem at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Monday, October 5th from 4 to 6 P.M.
