Obituary

DANVERS - Mary "Marie" Teresa (O'Connor) Johnson, 83 of Danvers and Bourne, MA died July 17, 2022, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Born in Collooney, County Sligo, Ireland she was the daughter of the late James and Christine (Moore) O'Connor. She attended bookkeeping school in Ireland for a short period.  She moved from Ireland in 1957 to live with her Uncle Tom, Aunt Florence, and cousin Maureen in the Bronx, New York.  She began working as a telephone operator at the age of 18. She later moved to Roslindale, MA.  Her father and siblings moved from Ireland as well.

While attending an Irish dance in Boston, she met her loving and devoted husband of 52 years Paul (PJ) Johnson. He has been by her side ever since. She retired from AT&T telephone company in 1997 after 40 years of service. She loved her job and took great pride in her work. She decided to work an additional 5 years as a switchboard operator at MIT Lincoln Lab where PJ worked as well. She retired a second time in May 2003 at the age of 63.

She adored her three grandchildren Kaitlyn, Tom, and Bridie. Her favorite activities included going to their shows including theater productions, dance recitals and baseball games. She loved making her famous brownies and potato salad and teaching them her secret recipes for both.

She and PJ moved to Cape Cod in 2000. She loved walking the canal, gardening, entertaining and visiting with their community of friends at Aptucxet Village where they lived.  She thoroughly enjoyed going to Irish dances with their close group of friends and consistently winning all the door prizes claiming, "Irish Luck."

Surviving are her husband Paul Johnson of Danvers/ Bourne, MA, son Patrick and wife Kimberly Johnson of Santa Cruz, CA, daughter Sheila and husband Bill Butler of Melrose, MA, grandchildren Kaitlyn Johnson, 17 from Santa Cruz, CA, Tom, 15 and Bridie, 13, from Melrose, MA, three grand dogs, Shadow, Cody, and Maddie. She is also survived by her sister Christine Lynam of West Bridgewater, MA, brother James O'Connor of Waltham, MA, brother Tom O'Connor and his wife Mary Ellen from Delaware, and brother Peter and his wife Joanne O'Connor of West Bridgewater, MA, close family Breedge Lawn of Watertown, MA, Jane O'Connor of Watertown, MA and Judy O'Connor Thompson of Florida and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she adored. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, and John Joe.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church 24 Conant St, Danvers, MA on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at 11 A.M. Interment to follow at Annunciation Cemetery, 155 Hobart St Danvers, MA. A Luncheon will follow at Danversport Yacht Club, at 1pm 161 Elliot St, Danvers and all are invited to continue the celebration of Mary's life. Assisting the family with the arrangements is O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St. (Rte. 62) DANVERS.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Society www.lewybodyresourcecenter.org.
