PEABODY- Mrs. Nancy M. Hurley, 93, died peacefully on June 11, 2015 at Sunrise at Gardner Park, Peabody, MA.

Nancy was born in Huttonsville, West Virginia, on September 11, 1921 to Kinsley and Isis (Hutton) McWhorter. Due to her father's work as an electrical engineer with the Virginia Electric and Power Company, Nancy attended schools throughout the south, excelling in her studies and making lifelong friends. When the family settled in Staunton, Virginia, Nancy attended Mary Baldwin College, an all-women's school that she supported throughout her life. Graduating with a BA in English in 1942, she moved to Washington, DC and utilized her language and analytical skills as a codebreaker for the Army Security Agency. While she kept these war secrets for 30 years (and even then would not talk about details), this work was a highlight of her life. During her service, she met fellow cryptanalyst George Hurley Jr who served at Arlington Hall and Bletchley Park, England; they were married in 1946. They honeymooned on Martha's Vineyard, a destination they returned to many times for memorable family vacations.

In the late 1950's, the family moved to Cheltenham, England where Nancy was an active member of the Anglo-American Club and made many British friends. In addition, the family travelled throughout the UK and in Europe, stirring a passion that lasted well into her 80's. When the family returned to the US, they settled in Colesville, Maryland where Nancy was a founding member of the Colesville Presbyterian Church. She served on many church committees and was an Elder in the early 70's when women had just begun to be welcomed into the church's Session. Along with her work in the Church, Nancy also served on the PTA and continued to support Mary Baldwin College alumnae organizations. She was recognized by Mary Baldwin with a "Service to Church" award in 1999. Throughout her volunteer commitments, Nancy was a strong advocate for civil rights and equality for all, fighting for the integration of the local neighborhood pool and advocating for gay rights within the Church.

Following the death of her husband George from ALS in 1993, Nancy traveled widely. Favorite destinations included an ElderHostel Habitat for Humanity trip to Athens, GA and a birdwatching expedition to Costa Rica. She spent many happy years at Riderwood in Maryland, and moved to Sunrise at Gardner Park to be closer to her daughter in 2011.

She is survived by a son G. Douglas Hurley and wife Lynn Taylor, West Seattle, WA; daughter Carol W. Hurley and husband William Carney, Sebasco Estates, ME; grandchildren Katherine Taylor-Hurley, Evan Taylor-Hurley and fiancée Kellie Carpenter, all of West Seattle, WA; and sister-in-law Lora Hopkins, widow of Nancy's beloved brother Buddy, who had died prematurely of cancer in 1956.
