SALEM- Mr. Patrick John Cloherty, 73, of Salem, former Director of the City of Salem Public Library, beloved husband of Lauretta (Moore) Cloherty, died Saturday, June 13th, 2015 at Kindred Hospital in Peabody following a brief illness. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Patrick John Sr. and Julia (Walsh) Cloherty. He grew up in Cambridge and was a graduate of Matignon High School; he received his Bachelor's Degree from Boston College and his Master's Degree in library Science from the Simmons College School of Library Science, a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Northeastern University. He also completed the required course work for a PHD in Public Administration at New York University. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army National Guard having been posted at Fort Knox, Kentucky until the time of his discharge in the 1960's. Patricks' lengthy career in Librarianship began while still in high school, when he was hired as a Library Page at the Cambridge Public Library. In 1967 he became the Director of the North Reading Public Library and in 1971 he was appointed Director of the Salem Public Library, a post he held until his retirement in 2003. Always active in library circles, he served on a number of state library boards and commissions as well as being a founding partner of Library Management Associates, a consulting firm for library building projects. He was formerly a long time member of the Salem Rotary Club and served as President of the Club in 1980-1981. Patrick and his wife traveled extensively throughout the continental United States and Canada, spending many summers in Prince Edward Island. Patrick is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lauretta (Moore) Cloherty of Salem, his sister, Mary Masterson of Cambridge, his niece Julie Masterson of Cambridge.
ARRANGMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service which will be held graveside in the Belmont Cemetery, Grove St., Belmont, Tuesday, June 23rd at 12 Noon. Assisting the family with the arrangements is The O'Donnell Funeral Home 46 Washington Sq., (At Salem Common) Salem. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Pat's memory to the St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Rd., Ashland, Montana, 59004-1001.
