Obituary

SALEM – Mr. Philip "Hago" Harrington, 73, of Salem, died peacefully on September 28th, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Joyce (Goodridge) Harrington, whom he was married to for 47 years.

The son of the late Raymond Sr. and Virginia (Welch) Harrington, he was a lifelong resident of Salem. After graduating from Salem High School in 1969, he spent decades working, volunteering, and raising his family in the Witch City. He was well known throughout the community, especially for his dedication to many children throughout Salem with his involvement in youth sports. In 1970, he started coaching teams in the Salem Pony League and Salem Midget Football. He continued coaching and volunteering for several programs, including the Salem Little League, Salem Recreation Basketball League, and the Saturday Morning Cartoon League. As president of the Salem Little League, he started a Challenger League in the city for children with disabilities. He helped establish the Jeff Morris Scholarship, named after the founder of the Saturday Morning Cartoon League, which helped many former players from the league with college expenses. He volunteered for several programs at Salem High School, including serving as a grill cook during football games at Bertram Field to help raise money for the SHS Class of 1995.

Mr. Harrington held several jobs throughout his life, including 28 years for the Salem Housing Authority's maintenance department, retiring in 1992. He was a long-time bartender, usually laughing and having fun with customers at Bertini's Restaurant, The V-Bar, and Lonnie's Place. He treasured his time with his regulars and always brought a smile to their faces with his wit. He also enjoyed poking fun at some, which was one of the ways he showed people love.

He served as a Salem Parks and Recreation Commission member from 1990 through 1996. He was instrumental in bringing a new clubhouse to Olde Salem Greens, a course he played weekly for several years and worked as a starter following his retirement.

Hago loved traveling and visiting new destinations around the world. He enjoyed cruises with his wife and their friends and made several trips to Disney World with his children and, later, his grandchildren.  He was an avid Boston sports fan and loved watching the Red Sox, Patriots, Notre Dame football, and the Celtics in both good times and bad. He was able to see several of those good times for the Celtics in person at the Boston Garden by splitting season tickets with his brothers. He also traveled with his wife to see Red Sox games in Baltimore, Texas, Anaheim, and spring training in Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (Goodridge) Harrington; his sons, Keith Harrington and his fiancé, Janet Raymond of Salem, NH and Daniel Harrington of South Yarmouth; his grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Nathaniel Harrington and Landon O'Connor; his siblings, Paul Harrington and his wife, Mary of Ipswich, Peter Harrington and his partner, Elizabeth Kauler of Salem, and Virginia Benjamin of Peabody, several nieces and nephews and so many friends, including dear friend, John Williams. He was the brother of the late Raymond Harrington Jr. and brother-in-law of the late Stephen Benjamin.
