Philip G. Knowles

TOPSFIELD - Philip George Knowles, 84, passed away peacefully on November 19th, 2025, at Kaplan House in Danvers, MA. Born on September 20th, 1941, in Lewiston, ME, Phil lived a life marked by dedication to family, community service, and a deep commitment to shaping the lives of young people.

Phil spent his formative years in Massachusetts, attending high school in both Boston and Brockton. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Boston University – a foundation that would guide much of his life’s work. After college, he began his career with the Boy Scouts of America, an organization that would remain close to his heart throughout his life.

Following his early work with the Scouts, Phil transitioned into sales within the paving industry across eastern Massachusetts. In 1994, he founded Bitcon Corp – paving specialists – a company he led with pride and dedication until his passing. His entrepreneurial spirit and tireless work ethic were hallmarks of his professional life.

Phil’s passion for Boy Scouts never waned. He served as both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and was the longtime Scoutmaster of Troop 81 in Topsfield. Over the course of 28 years, he guided more than 100 boys to the rank of Eagle Scout – a legacy that speaks volumes about his leadership and mentorship.

His commitment to public service extended beyond scouting. Phil served for many years as both Road Commissioner and Water Commissioner in Topsfield and contributed to numerous other committees over the decades. His civic involvement reflected a deep-rooted belief in giving back to the community he called home.

Behind Phil’s gruff exterior was a man who loved to laugh and tell stories – especially when he had an audience. This was a trait he picked up from years spent with family in West Forks, ME where he spent some of his early years with extended family and where he returned throughout his life. He was known for spinning tales that captivated listeners young and old. One of his greatest joys was sharing his love for all things Disney. Annual family vacations to Disney World became cherished traditions, filled with laughter, wonder, and memories that will live on through those who shared them with him – especially his grandchildren.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn Carmichael Knowles; sons Scott Knowles (Beccy) of Topsfield, Donald Knowles (Andrea) of Winchester, and Christopher (Kristen) of Bluffton, SC; grandchildren Mandi Bibbins, Vanessa Knowles, Callum Knowles, Landon Knowles, and Hudson Knowles; sister Virginia Carper (David) of Springfield, VA; as well as many nieces and nephews who held him dear.

He was predeceased by his son, Daniel Knowles and his granddaughter, Rachel Bibbins.

Phil’s legacy is one of steadfast service – to family, community, and country – and a life lived with purpose and heart. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

ARRANGEMENTS: A Celebration of Phil’s Life will be held at the Topsfield Congregational Church Meetinghouse, 9 East Common Street, Topsfield, MA on Saturday, January 17th at 11 A.M., followed by a reception at the Emerson Center (across the street).
