IPSWICH – Mr. Philip A. McCarthy, 77 of Ipswich, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 in the comfort of his home.

Born on Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts, Philip was the son of the late Jack (John A) and Bette (Irene E. O'Brien) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School.

In 1967, Phil enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country. It was his time in the military that he served as a cook at Ft. Hood in Texas for his fellow brothers. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, Phil continued his education at Salem State College where he became the editor of the school's newspaper "The Log".

For the next 35 years, Phil would embark on a rewarding career with the General Electric Company, where he developed the trade and skills of a machinist and planner. Phil was an avid photographer and incorporated his skills into his later professional life at GE.

In addition to his talent within his career, Phil was passionate towards stock car racing and had a 1987 Buick Grand National that he treasured. Through his editorial passions, Phil loved visiting the library, reading books and listening to books on tape, which he developed a wide collection of that he cherished. His love for knowledge will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.

Philip is survived by his brother, The Rev. Brien McCarthy of Paris, France and dear friend, Bill Gallant of Ipswich.
