Obituary

PEABODY - Phyllis P. Jones, 92, of Peabody, MA passed away in her sleep on Tuesday April 22, 2025 at Brooksby Village Continuing Care after a long period of failing health.

Born October 15, 1932 in Lewiston, ME she was the daughter of Clarence and Ethelyn (Odell) Penley.  She grew up in Auburn, ME, graduating from Edward Little High School.  Later after raising her family in Danvers, MA as a stay-at-home mother, she attended North Shore Community College in Beverly graduating with an Associate's Degree in Nursing, becoming a RN.  She worked for many years at Hunt Memorial Hospital and then Lynn Union Hospital before retiring in 1997.

She was a long-time member of Maple Street Congregational Church.  She was a member of the Adult Choir, the Music Committee, and a member of the Organ Committee during the purchase and installation of their Noack Organ.  She worked for several years on the monthly Ham and Bean Supper baking nearly 100 pies each month to be served or sold.

She loved knitting, and crocheting.  She was an avid amateur photographer travelling to many countries with her second husband John (Jack) Jones, an award-winning marine and landscape painter.  She was a member of the Danvers Art Association and the Rockport Art Association.

She is predeceased by her husband John Jones, an older brother Charles (Bud) Penley and his wife Pauline of Auburn, ME, and a younger brother, Paul Penley and his wife Marjorie of Griswald, CT.  She is survived by a son, Warren Lapham and wife Valerie of Graham, NC, a granddaughter, the Rev. Erin Flinn and husband Joey of Middletown, CT, three step-granddaughters; Kim Knowlton of Pittsboro, NC, Becky Sawchak and husband Adam of Pittsboro, NC, and Sara Hooven and husband Jesse of Stokesdale, NC.  She has one great-grandson, three step-great-grandsons and two step-great-granddaughters.  She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews and numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: At the request of the family there will be no visiting hours.  Interment will be at a later date at the family's convenience at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, ME. Assisting the family with the arrangements is O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) DANVERS.  Memorial donations may be made In Phyllis's name to the Maple Street Congregational Church, 90 Maple St., Danvers, MA 01923.
