Obituary

SALEM - Mr. Richard Arthur "Butch" Dalton, 84, a life-long resident of Salem and loving husband of Priscilla (Michaud) Dalton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in the comfort of his home with his devoted family by his side.

Born in Beverly, the son of the late Richard and Lillian (Leighton) Dalton, Butch was one of seven children. He was raised and educated in Salem, where he attended Saint Mary's Catholic Elementary and Salem High School. A lifelong learner, Butch shared a wealth of information both current and obscure.

Possessing a strong work ethic, Butch began working at the age of 12, setting pins at the local bowling alley. His dedication to his career is exemplified by the 50 years he spent with Stop & Shop, acting as the produce manager across several locations.

Known for his caring nature, generosity of spirit, and kind presence, Butch was also very easygoing, kept things in perspective, rarely spoke ill of anyone, and was a true gentleman. A man of few words, he spoke very deliberately, taking time to understand and reply appropriately. This was best exemplified by his clever and unexpected sense of humor and playful quips.  His grandchildren enjoyed, sometimes reluctantly, his many "Dad jokes."

Butch enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a league member for both sports but was happiest when spending time with his family. Above all else, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who delighted in the company of his grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by many.

In addition to his wife Priscilla, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage, Butch is survived by his children, Vikki Dalton Kelan and her spouse, Lynn McGoff of Salisbury; Susan Bradley and her husband, David of Salem; Brian Dalton of Salem; Sharon Dalton-Castor and her husband, Russell of Peabody; his grandchildren, Madison Castor, Griffin Dalton, Greyson Dalton and Taylor "Cricket" Dalton Castor; his sister, Sheila Bryson of Lynn; his brother, David Dalton and his wife, Janet of Somersworth, NH; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Butch was predeceased by his siblings, Kenneth Dalton, Susan Sullo, Steven Dalton and Dianne Minasian.
