SALEM – Mr. Robert O. Doward, 85 of Salem, loving husband of Doris P. (Nicholson) Doward, passed away peacefully from dementia on Sunday, August 18th, 2024, in the comfort of his home, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Lynn, Robert was the son of the late John and Louise (Savory) Doward. He was raised and educated in Lynn and was a 1957 graduate of Lynn Classical High School where he met a young Doris Nicholson, beginning their love story that would take them through 65-years of marriage.
Shortly after graduation, Robert enlisted into the military, proudly serving his country as a member of the United States Navy as a machinist mate stationed in the Pacific on USS Merrick (AKA-97).
Upon his honorable discharge from the military, Robert started his professional career and ultimately specialized in steam engineering, devoting more than 33 years to New England Power, Salem Harbor Station, and retired in 1998 as the Chief Engineer.
Leisurely, Robert enjoyed reading and learning about World War II history and creating beautiful oil paintings. He loved golfing and bowling and was a member of both the New England Power Golf League and a 25-year member of the New England Power Bowling League. Above all else, Robert loved his wife, children and family and will be deeply missed by all.
In addition to his beloved wife, Doris of Salem; Robert is survived by his daughter, Diane Murphy of Salem; his sons, David Doward of Salem and Brian Doward of Salem; his granddaughter, Kimberly Kussman and her husband, Brendan of Sandy, UT; and his 2 great-granddaughters, Hazel and Lucy Kussman. Robert was the brother of the late Elizabeth Storey and James Doward and brother-in-law of the late Shirley Doward and Gary Michael Storey.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend Robert's funeral service which will be held at O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) SALEM on Thursday, August 22nd at 11 A.M. Burial to follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Orne St., Salem. Visiting hours on Wednesday, August 21st from 4 to 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.
