WEST GARDINER, MAINE – Mr. Ronald J. Sweeney, of West Gardiner, Maine and formerly of Salem, beloved husband of Susan (Eskenazi) Sweeney, died peacefully, January 16, 2026, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
Born in Winchester, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Rita (Butler) Sweeney. He was raised and educated in Medford and was a graduate of Medford Vocational High School.
Mr. Sweeney had been employed for of 30 years as Carpenter and member of the Carpenters Union, Local 33 until the time of his retirement.
A long-time resident of the city of Salem, Ron was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Veragua Council #76 of Salem and past Grand Knight on 2 occasions. He was an avid sports fan and loved to cheer on his favorite teams, the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots and the Red Sox. Many years ago, Ron purchased a summer home in West Gardiner, Maine and enjoyed many summers together with his wife and family and friends. They made it their permanent residence and Ron became President of the Johnson Lane Rd Association. He loved to fish and bowl and enjoyed taking his dog for long walks.
A kind hearted man, Ron would lend his talents to any one in need. He could often be found helping family and friends with construction projects. He took great pride in build anything and everything for his family and friends. He was an extremely talented carpenter. He loved his family immensely and will be forever missed.
Ronald is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Susan (Eskenazi) Sweeney, his daughters, Heather S. Sweeney of Rochester, NH and Courtney R. Sweeney of Methuen, his 5 brothers, Paul, Lawrence, Mark, Kevin and Kenneth Sweeney, his sister, Jeanne Hill and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He is also survived by his beloved grand dog, whom he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Richard Sweeney.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held at O’Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) SALEM, Friday, March 13th at 12 noon. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours prior to the service former 10 A.M. to 12 Noon.
