SALEM – Mr. Steven Walter Coddens, 73 of Salem, formerly of South Peabody and the loving husband of Cara E. (Richards) Coddens, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 at Salem Hospital.
Steve was born in Salem, on September 5th, 1950 to the late Leon W. and June M. (Scarnegie) Coddens. He was raised and educated in South Peabody and attended the Peabody "Voke", graduating in 1968.
Upon his high school graduation, Steve enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country from September of 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1971. He served in the reserves until 1974 and would continue to devote his life to the many veterans and organizations within the Peabody and surrounding North Shore communities.
As he returned home from the military, Steve took great pride in working alongside his father and brothers in the family welding business known as Anvil Metal Products. He was particularly proud to learn the welding trade from his father and would continue to use his skills as he embarked on a lengthy professional career with National Grid until the time of his retirement.
Always a familiar face, Steve made friends wherever he went. He was generous and kind, always willing to lend a helping hand or provide support to others. Devoted to numerous veteran organizations, Steve was honored of being the past commandant of the Marine Corps League in Peabody and supported numerous veteran organizations. Steve loved staying busy and from a young age was always active, enjoying motorcycles, stock car racing and later in life billiard and dart leagues. His kindness and large heart will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife, Cara with whom Steve celebrated over 30 years of marriage, he is survived by his brothers; Lee Coddens, Dean Coddens and Brian Coddens. In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Coddens who passed in 1974.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours which will be held at O'Donnell Cremations – Funerals – Celebrations, 84 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) SALEM on Thursday, May 23rd from 4 to 6 P.M. with a ceremony to be held at 6 P.M. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody to be held at a later date.
