IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan (Shaw)
Weiner
February 8, 1944 – December 6, 2024
GLOUCESTER – After a long courageous battle with health issues, Susan (Shaw) Weiner, 80, of Gloucester, peacefully passed away at her home with family at her side on December 6th, 2024.
Born and raised in Adams, Massachusetts, Susan was the third daughter of the late Lena and William "Bucky" Shaw. An aunt by the age of two, Susan was very close to her two older sisters throughout her life, Gerry and Bobbie. After graduating from Simmons College with a degree in journalism, Susan wrote for Skating, the official magazine of the US and Canadian Figure Skating Associations, becoming the publication's managing editor by age 25.
On July 20th, 1968, she married Barry Weiner, an attorney in Boston — they would celebrate their first anniversary watching Neil Armstrong take his first step on the Moon. Moving to Gloucester to raise their family in 1969, Susan was active in the community, including serving as president of the Addison Gilbert Hospital Auxiliary. She also became a longtime member of the Manchester Bath & Tennis and Bass Rocks Golf Clubs, where she spent time on the beach, played tennis and golf, and competed in cribbage. A voracious reader and devotee of the New York Times Sunday crossword, Susan's nightstand shelf was often stacked with the crime novels of Lawrence Block or Robert B. Parker, the latest Carl Hiaasen mystery, or one of James Herriot's depictions of life in the English countryside. She had a deep knowledge of classic films and a small but varied music collection, which ranged from Roy Orbison to Creedence Clearwater Revival to spaghetti western film scores. At dinners, she would regularly forgo fine cuisine for a good cheeseburger and fries. Quick-witted, unpretentious and rarely prone to sentimentality, Susan had a quiet but persistent influence on the lives of those around her. For holidays and birthdays, gifts were never grandiose but always selected with care and specificity. "Nana" never missed sending a card to her grandchildren for Valentine's Day or Easter or an advent calendar for Christmas.
Susan leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Barry, daughter, Amy, of Gloucester, and son, Matthew (Colleen), of Newton, and three granddaughters, Josie, Phoebe, and Zoe and numerous nieces & nephews.
