IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Joseph
Hallinan Jr.
January 25, 1923 – February 1, 2025
PEABODY – Mr. Thomas Joseph Hallinan Jr., 102, formerly of Peabody, beloved husband of 74 years to the late Dorothy (Shea) Hallinan, died peacefully, Saturday, February 1st, 2025.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Thomas J. Sr. and Louise (Kay) Hallinan. He was raised and educated in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1941. He continued his education at Boston Trade School, where he mastered the printing trade.
Following graduation from trade school in 1944, Mr. Hallinan worked for many of the larger printing houses in Boston. As a young man, Tom composed a local newsletter during World War II that was sent to GI's and families alike keeping the boys apprised of what was going on back home. He had an early love of the written word and newspapers. In 1950, he began an association with the Salem Evening News, which lasted for over 40 years, until the time of his retirement. He worked in the printing division and matriculated to becoming a Composer and Proof Reader for many years. He had an acutely keen eye and could spot type offsets and misprints that most would miss. He was a valued member of the team.
A long-time resident of the City of Peabody, Tom was an active and outstanding member of the Peabody Elks Lodge #1409 and was bestowed as an honorary life member. He held the position of Lodge Secretary for over 50 years. He also held state and district positions in the Elks, from District Deputy and beyond. He and his wife travelled extensively attending Elks conventions throughout the US. He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed sport in general.
Tom was handed lemons many times in his life, but he always found a way to make lemonade. He over came many challenges and obstacles throughout his 102 years always with a smile. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of family and his knowledge of all things "Peabody", from history, to politics, to sports and neighborhoods, he knew it all.
Thomas is survived by his son, David Hallinan and his wife, Hazel of Lowell, his granddaughter, Becky Eleftheriou of Methuen, his grandson, Thomas Hallinan of Reno, NV, his God daughter, Elizabeth Armstrong of Peabody, several nieces and nephews and his dear family friends, Mary Kate Kiley-Brosnan and her husband, David Brosnan of Peabody.
