DANVERS - Thomas M. Rourke, of Danvers, died peacefully on July 11, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born in Beverly and raised in Beverly and Beverly Farms, which he always considered his childhood home.

Tom was married for 60 years to his late wife, Patricia (Harney), originally of Salem; they made Danvers their home, raising 5 children together. Tom was a 1960 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and later earned Master’s Degrees in Education and Mathematics; many on the North Shore will remember him as Professor Rourke, for his 4 decades of teaching at Rockport High School, Danvers High School, and North Shore Community College. Many more people will remember him for his passionate love of the game of golf.

Tom was the son of the late Nora (Sarsfield) Rourke and Daniel J.F. Rourke. He was the last surviving sibling of five: Daniel J.F. Rourke, Jr., Patricia Holmberg Caffrey, Nora Holness, and Sara “Sally” Reed. For the first 10 years of his life, Tom grew up on Prospect Street, near downtown Beverly, where he and his friends and siblings played on the big rock outcroppings, delivered papers, sledded in the winters, and saw Saturday movies at the Cabot Cinema. In 5th grade, he moved to Beverly Farms, joining a large extended family. In the 14 years he lived in the Farms, he attended St. Margaret’s Church and school, worked on the Loring family farm, played baseball, bought his first car and went to St. John’s Prep, where he was an excellent student. He also married Patricia and had his first 2 children.

In 1966, Tom and Pat bought a brand-new house in Danvers. By this time, Tom was teaching and Pat was a registered nurse. They were so hardworking that at times, Tom would have 4 or 5 jobs! This allowed them to have 3 more children. Anyone who knew Tom knows that it wouldn’t take him more than 5 minutes of conversation before he brought up one of his kids. They were truly the pride and great joy of his life; they were his purpose and his greatest accomplishment. Tom was a joyous parent, a fun uncle, and the grandparent who would get on the ground with the toddlers. Some of his favorite life memories were very simple: wrestling with the kids on the living room floor or going to hit balls and grab an ice cream after dinner on a warm summer night.

Beyond his family, the great love–obsession, really–of his life was the game of golf. Tom was a member of Ferncroft Country Club and one of its dedicated “6:52s.” Over almost 7 decades of playing, he won some critical tournaments, including the Salem Country Club Fourball (twice), the Winchester Father & Son Invitational; and the State Father-Daughter with Kathleen (three times). Tom was valued as a partner and a clutch team player. Even among such prestigious wins, his favorite annual tournament was the Rourke Championship, a tournament invented by Tom and his brother Danny in the mid-1970s.

Golf enabled Tom, the most gregarious, outgoing person you’ve probably ever encountered, to connect with friends and strangers. He also brought many people into the game as a coach and teacher, formally at North Shore Community College and St. John’s Prep, and informally with anyone who was willing. He loved playing with his children and grandchildren, some of whom became champion golfers.

Tom embraced life. He was the embodiment of the expression ‘joie de vivre.’ He always tried to make others happy with small acts of daily kindness, such as a joke or a compliment to a stranger. A lot of people reading this will have known Tom Rourke from his 88 years of active community life on the North Shore. Maybe he was a regular at your bank, your coffee shop, or your nail salon (he loved a good pedicure!). Maybe he bought clubs or ice cream from you every summer. Maybe he was your neighbor or your friend’s father or grandfather. Maybe he was your teacher, your tutor, or your coach. He knew you and saw you as a valuable person, and he’ll see you in Heaven.

Thomas is survived by his children: Kelly Vendetti and her husband, Michael, of Bolivia, North Carolina; Kevin Rourke and his wife, Karen, of Danvers; Kathleen Rourke Natale and her husband, Christian Natale, of Danvers; Kerry Rourke and her husband, Jeffrey Nicholas, of Salem; and Keith Rourke of Millville. He is also survived by his favorite people, his grandchildren: Aidan Natale and his wife, Jessica; Colin Natale; Julia Natale; Tyler Vendetti; Owen Rourke-Nicholas; Chloe Rourke-Nicholas; Ian Rourke; and Kenzie Rourke. He will also be remembered with love by Faith Larsen, Barbara Magnuson, Silvia Andrade, the Thomas family, and many friends, nieces and nephews, and their families.
