What to Do When a Death Occurs

  • Notify Authorities

    The place where a person dies will determine your immediate steps. 

    • Healthcare facility (e.g. hospital, nursing home): Staff will notify authorities
    • Hospice: Contact your hospice nurse, who will fill out the necessary forms
    • Workplace, home, or another location: Dial 911 and speak to the police department and/or emergency services.

    If you know you will be working with O’Donnell, you can let any other care providers know and give them our contact information. That way, we can begin supporting you immediately.

  • Meet with Funeral Director

    Your funeral director will be a wonderful resource when planning any arrangements, from simple cremation to traditional burial services with a wake and/or reception. The funeral director is more than a person who will help you select arrangements; they are a compassionate listening ear and are incredibly experienced with navigating the specific challenges of end-of-life matters.
