OUR HISTORY
A Century of Caring
Each service at O’Donnell Funeral Home is the culmination of 100 years of family businesses serving Salem, Danvers, and communities on the North Shore. Initially founded in 1925 by Henry J. O’Donnell Sr. in downtown Salem, the first O’Donnell Funeral Home was also a livery business. Since that time, numerous generations of the O’Donnell family joined and led the business through as it merged with several other area funeral homes including MacDonald Funeral Home, Dubiel Funeral Home, Peterson Funeral Home (1987) and The David Gonet Funeral Home (2014).
Today, O’Donnell Funeral Home is led by Anthony O’Donnell, who joined the family business in 2000 as the fourth generation of funeral directors. Under Anthony’s leadership, the Salem and Danvers locations have undergone significant renovations and updates necessary for a meaningful, seamless, and contemporary funeral experience. With a modern fleet of Cadillac vehicles and a focus on personalized services, the O’Donnell family continues to serve North Shore families with dignity and respect.

GIVING BACK
Supporting Our Neighbors
and Community
From veterans support, educational advancement, youth and high school sports partnerships, charity work and church and social justice, the O’Donnell Funeral Home team is deeply connected to the communities of the North Shore. We are honored to be aligned with many impactful local and national organizations.

Our Giving Priorities
At the Holidays
During the holiday season, the O’Donnell family and staff give back through numerous organizations, including “adopting” families through Catholic Charities and participating in the giving tree at the IC Church. We also work with the Toys for Tots, Mass State Police, HAWK, Timmy‘s Angels, and a variety children‘s charities and other groups in need of collected toys and clothing.
Education & Athletics
O‘Donnell Funeral Home is honored to suport students, athletes, and future professionals throughout the North Shore. We have been a proud partner of Salem Public Schools for generations, supporting students and families both in and out of the classroom. Each year, the O‘Donnell Family Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior.
O‘Donnell is a major supporter of the Agganis Foundation which privides scholarships and hosts athletic events across the region—Anthony O‘Donnell is a former member of the Board of Directors for their lacrosse event. We have also served as a corporate sponsor for the Salem Foundation for Education, the Danvers Falcons Booster Club, and Masco High School Athletics in Topsfield.
Beyond sponsorships, staff members take part in mock accident programs at Salem High School to educate teens on the dangers of drinking and driving, volunteer as guest readers at Witchcraft Elementary, and speak at North Shore Community College and UMass-Lowell nursing classes. Anthony O‘Donnell has shared insights on green burials at Salem State University, and the funeral home regularly partners with Care Dimenstions to provide continuing education for nurses and social workers.
Neighborhood Associations
Being a good neighbor is at the heart of who we are. As residents and business owners on Salem Common for 100 years, the O’Donnell Family has been active in the SCNA for generations. Thomas O‘Donnell was awarded the SCNA Award for his continued support of the neighborhood along with other influential business owners and volunteers. A favorite tradition dating back 25+ years is donating the annual SCNA Christmas Tree that many in our community and beyond enjoy.
Church & Faith Communities
Through leadership, volunteerism, and financial support, O’Donnell Funeral Home is committed to strengthening churches and faith communities across the North Shore.
For generations, O’Donnell has been a part of parish life at Immaculate Conception Church in Salem—from leading events to supporting parish organizations. In recent years, we have donated $25,000 to restore the church bell and contributed to the restoration of stained glass windows. We are also proud to be the sole sponsor of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Salem.
O’Donnell has given $5,000 to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, sponsored annual events at St. Richard’s and St. Mary of the Annunciation in Danvers, and provided calendars and viewing screens to St. Rose of Lima in Topsfield and St. Agnes in Middleton.
The O’Donnell team also lends a hand to fundraising at Maple Street Congregational and North Shore Unitarian Universalist Churches in Danvers. Funeral Director Diane Gallagher is active with the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Salem and Funeral Director Brianna Bennett has sung in the choir and served at Tabernacle Congregational Church.
Timmy’s Angels
Funeral Director Diane Gallagher and her daughter, Kristen Almquist-Cevallos, have been longtime fundraisers and volunteers for Timmy’s Angels, a local Salem non-profit 403B charity that provides coats and gifts to those in need during the holiday season. O’Donnell supports Diane in her community activities with annual financial donations.
Veterans
We believe it is deeply important to honor the sacrifices made by veterans in defense of the freedoms we all enjoy. By commemorating their service and remembering those who have passed, we affirm that—regardless of race, religion, background, or circumstance—we are united as Americans.
We are proud to host a free annual Veterans Appreciation Brunch at the Danversport Yacht Club each year on the day before Memorial Day.
Community Events
O’Donnell Funeral Home is proud to support events for the communities we have served for generations. O’Donnell Salem often opens its parking lot for community use—recently hosting the July 4th Children’s Bike Parade, providing free parking for North Shore Pride, and supporting many other local events.
